Letter from the Secretary General

Dear Prospective Faculty Advisors and Delegates,

On behalf of the Secondary Schools’ United Nations Symposium 2011 Secretariat, it is my distinct honor and privilege to invite you all to the nineteenth iteration of SSUNS. Over the past two decades, SSUNS has gradually grown into one of the premier model United Nations conferences in the western hemisphere. Held every year in Montréal, I cannot emphasize enough how excited we are to welcome you to La Belle Province of Québec!

Building on the legacy of our predecessors, this year’s SSUNS seeks to elevate the conference experience and experiment with new projects while retaining our tradition of being an instructive endeavor. To this end, SSUNS 2011 seeks to spark an initiative to transform through its theme of ‘We Ignite.’ In an era of increased geopolitical change, the change in focus from an individual initiative to a collaborative effort has altered traditional precepts and perceptions of politics and power. As the torchbearers of a new decade and at the helm of this transition, we hope that our delegates will be agents of this metamorphosis and together, ignite a passion for change and reform.

Ensuring that our theme permeates through all aspects of the conference, SSUNS 2011 will be simulating a diverse array of twenty-one committees, which span both traditional and special sessions of the General Assemblies and Economic and Social Councils, as well as more nuanced Specialized Agencies and Crises reflecting the diversity of thoughts and spirits during the conference. Additionally, SSUNS endeavors to explore the city of Montréal with you, offering delegates an opportunity to experience some of the city’s finest attractions. This year’s repertoire of projects to engage delegates with the city include tours of museums, skating at the picturesque Vieux Port and tours of the internationally renowned McGill University. The crescendo of the weekend will be the delegate soirée on Saturday night, which is always an eagerly anticipated event.

In the midst of these changes, SSUNS still retains education as its foundation. Over the course of the weekend, delegates will have the opportunity to collaborate and debate with students from around the world. Galvanizing discussions and steering the conference to newer echelons of professionalism, our staff of more than 300 dedicated volunteers will always be available to answer your questions and guide your students in their journey at the Delta Centreville, one of Montréal’s finest conference facilities.

We extend to you this website and look forward to answering any questions or concerns that you might have. Once again, we hope that you enter the doors of the Delta Centreville excited for a unique experience and leave with nothing but cherished memories.

Until then, I remain yours sincerely,

Suryadeep Seal
