The Wild Wild West— Alberta Independence Movement*

ONLINE COMMITTEE

Howdy Delegates!

Welcome to the final frontier on the last best West.

After years of divisive federal politics, the Wild Rose province has had enough. The Liberal government has cancelled one pipeline too many, and the Wexit Party of Alberta has been swept into the majority of the Alberta Legislature. Armed with provincial pride and low taxes, you will have to forge a new trail as an independent Albertan nation.

First, Alberta must navigate the difficult process of secession. With fruitful negotiations between the Canadian government, the surrounding provinces and territories, and Alberta, a peaceful transition might be possible. But some Albertans are itching for a fight, which could force this matter to be settled by force. Either way, remaining in the country is simply not an option, as years of tensions have shown that renegotiations will not be enough. Once independent, you will need to establish a government that represents your people and can feasibly support an entire country.

Next, an independent Alberta will have to establish themselves on the world stage. International relations between nearby countries, like the US and Canada, will be crucial in ensuring the safety and success of this new nation. In addition, Alberta will have to navigate the waters of international organizations in order to become a country with stake in global affairs and trade.

But that’s not all. As climate change continues its course, Alberta is plagued by wildfires, and has become the new Tornado capital of the world. But as luck would have it, the largest deposit of oil was found right in the heart of the Rockies and the money generated from it will be enough to power Alberta through the next century.

With Alberta on the verge of breaking free, and with a myriad of new situations it needs to tackle, it is up to y’all to guide Alberta through these difficult times. It’s time to pick yourselves up by your (Cowboy) bootstraps, because the birth of a nation is in your hands.

The Dais is excited to meet all of the delegates at SSUNS 2021!
