UNSC 2060: the War of the Sahara

The year is 2060, and the United Nations Security Council must contend with a fraught regional conflict in the Western Sahara over control of natural resources. While much of the world has transitioned to green energy, many developing countries still rely on oil and natural gas. The Western Sahara, a region rich with these resources, has accordingly become a highly desirable territory, and tensions have grown over the years as different surrounding countries have sought to secure control of the territory.

Due to the increasingly hostile situation, the UNSC must intervene to prevent further bloodshed, whether by attempting to foster cooperation between the involved parties or by determining the legitimacy of their different claims to sovereignty. Additionally, member states must be aware of the potential harm that could come to citizens in the area due to the conflict and the potential effect of international responses on the outcome. Member states will need to carefully consider regional dynamics, diplomatically navigate historical tensions, and come up with resolutions that ensure different actors have access to the resources they need.

This committee is intended for delegates interested in both GA and Crisis-style elements. While no experience is required in previous UNSCs, delegates should come prepared to work diplomatically with other members to write directives, respond to in-room crises, and write a final resolution for the committee. Please note there will be no backroom for this committee, thus individual crisis arcs will not be required.

The Dais is excited to meet all of the delegates at SSUNS 2021!

If you have any questions regarding the committee, please feel free to email us at sa@ssuns.org
